Annual Meeting in Cork: Advancing Sustainable Aquaculture

The IGNITION project held its annual meeting on the 18th and 19th of April 2024, at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork, Ireland. This event brought together project partners and stakeholders to review significant advancements, prepare for the upcoming 18-month milestone, and align strategies for the future of the project.

The meeting kicked off with some welcoming remarks, setting a collaborative tone for the days ahead. CIIMAR, the project’s coordinating institution, provided an overview of project management and future plans. Throughout the sessions, work package leaders presented their progress, showcasing impressive results from various scientific trials.

One of the key highlights was the stress trials on shrimp, where researchers demonstrated the tracking of individual shrimp to monitor changes in behaviour, a crucial step in understanding stress responses. Additionally, updates were provided on the extraction of bioactive compounds from halophytes, along with a comprehensive study on the return on investment of halophyte production. Data from past trials were reviewed to gather information essential for identifying new stress and health biomarkers. The team also shared progress on the development of new sensors designed to measure changes in relevant biomarkers, enhancing non-invasive monitoring techniques. Other significant updates included vaccination trials and the genetic responses to stress in both fish and invertebrates, highlighting IGNITION’s comprehensive approach to improving aquaculture practices.

Participants also had the opportunity to tour the Tyndall National Institute and University College Cork (UCC), gaining insights into biosensor development and other cutting-edge technologies. This tour emphasized the collaborative spirit and innovation driving the IGNITION project. The meeting culminated in a series of breakout sessions, promoting deeper interaction among work packages and setting the stage for strategic planning. Partners discussed the next steps, ensuring a cohesive approach to achieving the project’s goals and preparing for the upcoming reporting period.

The IGNITION project remains committed to advancing sustainable aquaculture through innovative research and collaboration. The annual meeting in Cork marked another milestone in our journey towards a blue revolution.
