New IGNITION fact sheets for blue economy stakeholders

IGNITION is launching a series of fact sheets for blue economy stakeholders, designed to support the uptake of project results by the aquaculture sector as they become available. The first two fact sheets in this series have just been published, translating recent IGNITION research into clear, practical insights for producers, breeders, and feed manufacturers.

The first fact sheet focuses on functional feed ingredients for fish and shrimp, presenting IGNITION results on bioactive compounds derived from salt-tolerant plants. It highlights their bactericidal activity against key aquaculture pathogens, immune-enhancing and anti-inflammatory properties, and potential to support growth and production performance. The fact sheet also emphasises the sustainability of these feed solutions, which do not compete for freshwater or arable land and contribute to more circular bio-based value chains.

The second fact sheet addresses resilience in bivalve aquaculture, with a focus on Manila clams. It presents IGNITION results from two complementary stress challenges—marine heatwaves simulated under laboratory conditions and resistance to Perkinsus olseni assessed in a naturally affected farming area—combined with large-scale genotyping of surviving and deceased individuals using a dual-species SNP array. Together, these results support data-driven selection decisions and the development of more resilient and predictable clam production systems.

Together, these fact sheets mark the first outputs in the series of dissemination materials aimed at blue economy stakeholders, supporting informed decision-making, industry uptake of research results, and adaptation to climate change and disease pressure in aquaculture.

The fact sheets are now available for download in the Resources section of the IGNITION website. Translations into Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian will be made available in the coming months.
