Cadiz hosted IGNITION’s 5th progress meeting

The IGNITION project held its 5th progress meeting on April 3rd and 4th, 2025, at the Antiguo Cuartel de la Bomba, University of Cadiz, Spain. Partners gathered to present their latest results, explore future collaborations, and discuss challenges encountered over the previous months, alongside strategies for addressing them.

The meeting began with a brief discussion on data safety, followed by a presentation about acute stress markers in fish and operational welfare indicators (OWIs) for shrimp. This welfare-focused session was followed by a presentation on the application of machine vision (MV) to detect changes in the body mass of lumpfish and ballan wrasse, based on a series of points indicating the morphometrics of both species.

Subsequent presentations covered the results of halophyte-extracted compounds for protein recovery. Improved fish immunization using outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) was also discussed during this session, as well as the discovery of some new non-invasive biomarkers selected by machine learning algorithms. New data on the genotyping and phenotyping of shrimp and clams were also presented.

The meeting concluded with discussions on the dissemination and communication of the project’s outcomes, including the use of infographics and videos, as well as presentations at aquaculture journals and conferences. One such opportunity is the upcoming Aquaculture Europe 25, scheduled to take place in Valencia, Spain, from September 22nd to 25th.
